River Wye Canoe & Kayak Courses
We provide an extensive range of courses in canoeing and kayaking, from beginner to advanced, in traditional open style Canadian canoes and inland river kayaks over a number of days which include training and practice opportunities. We provide challenging and technical skill set training and assessment which provide an opportunity to practice and gain BCU certification.
Our courses will provide you with the experience and skill required to progress to the next level courses. All courses are located on different sections of the River Wye depending on individuals existing skill levels and canoeing and kayaking river water experience and include the popular River Wye Grade 2 level rapids at Symonds Yat.Individuals are welcome to join on set courses, please see scheduled dates for the course your are interested in and contact us to check available , we also provide custom courses and private lessons for individuals or groups at the best rates around. Courses include equipment however BCU three star candidates will be expected to have most of their own.
All Canoe and Kayak Courses are held on the stunning River Wye, we can also arrange Tipi camping for custom courses for canoe or kayak Groups needing to stay overnight for multi day courses, Please see our Tipi campsite based in Monmouth

Introduction to Canoeing
Enjoy a day out on the river and learn all about the canoe at the same time. We take on a river journey through fantastic wooded valleys learning basic canoe skills and techniques along the way. You need to bring a packed lunch as we will stop riverside for a lunch break. It's a fun and relaxing day perfect for the weekend! Introduction to White Water Canoeing
A wet and exciting day for those who are water confident and have done a good bit of canoeing on the flat water. We run a river trip, learning fundamental preparatory moving water drills and techniques on the flat water before putting them into practice on our training rapids at Symonds Yat. You will learn how to go into out of and across currents as well as picking and paddling routes down them, river hazards are also a subject so you know what to be wary of and how to conduct yourselves to be safe while having fun. Foundation in Canoeing
This three day course takes in at least two different fantastic river trips on the Wye and some site specific lessons on rescues, you will learn how to paddle bow and stern, solo and tandem including the main strokes required to do everything you need to, river travel, hazards, traditional techniques are all covered. This is a great mini break, loads of fun and a great jump start in open canoeing if you intend to take it up fully. There is so much to canoeing you will be surprised what there is to learn. Introduction to Kayaking
Get a taste of kayaking, enjoy the challenge and the fun. You will learn about the boats, equipment, river etiquette and safety before floating your boat, the rest of the day flows during a 7 mile journey on the Wye with skills sessions on route and time to practice in between, equipment, transport and coaching included. You need to bring a packed lunch for a riverside stop on the way, you'll also get to have a go at running the famous Symonds Yat rapids, only if you fancy it. You'll be amazed how much you learned by the end of the day with the expert passing down of skills and tips.

Introduction to White Water Kayaking
This is a great fun day for those who have decent control of a kayak on flat water and think they could handle some stronger currents, please expect to get wet, it's a good sign you are trying hard enough. The course is designed to develop your skills to enable you to efficiently handle your craft on moving water, skills include reading moving water, hydrology, ferry-gliding, breaking in & out, supporting, hazard identification, line choice. The Symonds Yat rapids are pretty gentle and are a great training area to practice and perfect the necessary skills you need to take on more committing sections of rivers. Foundation in Kayaking
This course gives you a solid base in kayak skills across the board, including flat and moving water, it gives you a great platform to develop on and great for anyone wishing to take up the sport. The first day introduces equipment uses and designs followed by basic movement skills and a short river journey. The 2nd day we will introduce more advanced skills and run through the rapids, we will have the chance to introduce some basic moving water skills so you know how to approach gentle currents. The third day more advanced strokes, stronger and faster and if tides allow a trip down the Tidal Wye to Chepstow Castle. BCU 1 Star Award Canoe & Kayak
This is a fun day long course designed to teach the basics and show people how much fun canoeing and kayaking can be with a certificate to show for it. The BCU say: A flat water award in canoeing or kayaking that demonstrates an individual has basic boat control and foundation skills.The one star can be taken in any kind of paddle sport craft (e.g. sit-on-top, slalom C2, polo boat, sea kayak, racing canoe etc.)

BCU 2 Star Award Canoe & Kayak
An improvement award that helps paddlers develop fundamental paddle sport skills on flat water. The emphasis is on gaining a breadth of experience, creating the desired movement of the boat and developing an understanding into how the paddle, boat and water interact.
Previous experience: BCU 1 Star skill and about 6 days total of paddling canoes and kayaks, age 14+
Activity Cost: £170pp exc certificate

British Canoe Union (BCU) 3 Star Award - White Water Kayak
The 3 Star Award is where you choose a specific discipline of canoeing or kayaking, those who fancy White Water kayak will go for this one, the two days of training is great fun, practicing all the fundamental white water techniques and skills required to safely descend easy White water rivers as a competent member of a group. The assessment is 1 day taking in a group trip at the right level to show off your skills, an eskimo roll should be completed in three attempts for the assessment.
Previous experience: BCU 2 Star or similar experience
Activity Cost: £190pp for two days training £100 for the assessment, excludes certificate cost

British Canoe Union (BCU) 3 star award - Open Canoe
The 3 Star Award is where you choose a specific discipline of canoeing or kayaking, those taking up open boating will go for this one, the award includes detailed strokes for controlling your boat, J-stroke, stern pry, draws and pry's, turns on the move and on the spot solo and tandem, basic moving water skills and open water skills, along with equipment and boat setups. The assessment is 1 day taking in a group trip at the right level to show off your skills.
Previous experience: BCU 2 Star or similar skill plus 10+ days of practice
Activity Cost: £190pp for two days training, £100 for the assessment, excludes certificate cost

British Canoe Union (BCU) Foundation Safety and Rescue Course
Flat water rescue course for all types of paddlesport craft. Includes equipment, preparation, planning, throwbags, towing, deep water rescues from/of canoes and kayaks. Recommended equipment for participants includes: Towline/tow system, throwline, 'sling/webbing tape & HMS screwgate karabiner', whistle, river knife. This course is a prerequisite to instructor training courses but provides good skills for all paddlers.
Previous experience: BCU 2 Star or same ability
